What is Montessori?
“Montessori” is the name of a method of instruction developed by the Italian educator Dr. Maria Montessori. In a Montessori classroom, children learn at their own pace and are given time to explore their own interests. Montessori education helps to develop independence, responsibility and the love of learning.
Philosophy
1. Each child has a purpose to fulfill. If all his or her needs are met, including education, he or she will fulfill that purpose for the benefit of humanity.
2. Children should be encouraged to follow their own interests.
3. Teachers should have a profound respect for each child’s uniqueness.
4. Children learn through their senses. After a concrete experience, children are ready to abstract concepts at appropriate ages.
5. Children naturally love to learn and are internally motivated.
6. Children should learn at their own pace and level.
7. Children who to learn to understand and get along with others different than themselves are the hope for peace in the world.
